A study has found that the number of retirees who still possess superannuation funds at the end of their life has been grossly overestimated. The Association of Superannuation Funds of Australia (ASFA) found that only 20% of Australian’s over 60 were still holding superannuation funds.
More specifically 80% of Australians over 60 had no superannuation funds whatsoever four years prior to their death. Of those over age 80, 90% had no superannuation funds in the four years prior to their death. Of the 2.7 million Australians over 70, 1.7 million held no superannuation and the rest had a median balance between $100,000 and $149,000.
