At least once a week, we speak to someone who has been pushed into calling us by a partner, parent, or a friend. Sometimes they’re just starting a new role at their first full time job. Others are nearing retirement. The common thread that connects them all is that they have no idea what a financial adviser can do for them. The prospect of seeing a financial adviser (sometimes also called a financial planner) can be daunting, especially if you’ve never seen one before. But to put it simply, a financial adviser can help you understand your financial situation and offer expert advice on how to achieve your goals. The below diagram shows some (but not all) of the topics you can discuss with your adviser. A financial adviser can explain how each of these areas connect, and the topics you should be focusing on versus the ones that aren’t relevant to you. For example, an adviser can assist with goals such as:
Remember, every person's individual situation will be different. If you are young or debt free, you likely won’t need to worry about debt coverage, but you may be more interested in creating an investment than a retiree. Is financial advice just for people who are retiring? Not at all! We see many people who are more focused on cashflow, buying a house, or ensuring they are properly insured. But it’s also not a bad idea to be thinking about retirement, no matter your age. For many, your superannuation will be your largest financial asset. It’s an asset that will be with you most of your life, growing in the background. The younger you are, the more impact changes will have on your future. What is general advice? You may hear us mention that initial consultations are general advice only. This means that the advice is not tailored to your specific situation. The adviser is not recommending anything specific but rather showing your options of what you could do. Comprehensive advice is provided later, once the adviser has reviewed your full financial situation.
