Have you just received your Permanent Impairment (PI) offer from DVA? Not sure what to do next? Who can get a PI offer? PI offers are available to those who have experienced an injury or condition that is assessed as being caused by your Australian Defence Force (ADF) service. These impairments can relate to your physical or mental health and are assessed by the Department of Veteran Affairs (DVA) on a point scale. If you are under the Military Rehabilitation & Compensation Act 2004 (MRCA) scheme and assessed at over 50 points, you may be eligible for a PI offer. What do I do now? Once you receive your offer you will generally have 6 months to decide if you’d like to take the compensation as a lump sum or a partial lump sum with a weekly amount. DVA may extend this deadline under very specific circumstances. If you do not believe you can make the election prior to the due date, we recommend alerting DVA as soon as possible to see if an extension can be granted. Can I get Financial and/or Legal advice? If you PI offer is accepted under the MRCA and at 50 or more points you may be eligible for funding. If you are eligible, it will usually be displayed on the second page of your offer with a dollar amount. It’s important to note that if you would like to get financial and/or legal advice as part of this lump sum, you must seek advice prior to accepting the offer.
